Telstra’s big bad week
Last week wasn’t good for Telstra. Australia’s largest telecommunications company’s profit fell by 3.3 percent to A$1.85 billion (US$1.65 billion) for the half year to Dec. 31, with sales revenue falling by 2.5 percent to A$12.3 billion. Sensis, Telstra’s advertising and directories arm, which includes its YellowPages and WhitePages brands, took one of the biggest hits of all divisions with revenue falling 7.3 percent to A$959 million. If that wasn’t bad enough, Telstra and Sensis then lost an intellectual property case – not just a run of the mill case, but one which cuts to the very core of any directories business. The Federal Court of Australia ruled that the company’s databases did not fall under the protection of the country’s copyright laws.
